You have gum disease or periodontitis.  Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults but is easily preventable.  Treatment of the disease, on the other hand, is more difficult and unpredictable.  If you have red and bleeding gums, now is the time to have them checked, before permanent damage has been done.  Earlier is better than later.
