Children
Do you recommend fluoride for children?
Absolutely. Fluoride is just one more ingredient in the recipe for preventing decay much like dental sealants. We strongly believe in providing whatever will help children grow up with healthy and strong teeth. Prevention is much better than treating decay. If you have any questions or concerns about fluoride, please talk to us. We respect your concerns.
Do you see children?
Dr. Canarsky believes that everyone deserves to have a painless dental experience every time. Many adults dread going to the dentist because of an earlier negative experience. Dr. Canarsky loves children and appreciates the opportunity to provide positive dental experiences for them.
What is your philosophy about treating children? When should they be seen?
A good age to see most children is 2-3 years of age. Children can be seen sooner if you feel there is a problem. At 2-3 years of age, most children will have all of their baby teeth and it is a good point in time to check their growth and development and check for tooth problems.
Our goal is to make dentistry a great experience for every child. We do not believe in pushing or forcing children beyond their comfort level. Too many adults have had bad experiences early in life which have caused them to end up with dental phobias and problems later on. If parents are not careful, these issues can be passed on to their children. One of the most rewarding things we do is to make dentistry a great experience for kids and see this carried on into adulthood.
Choosing a Dentist
How do I know if a dentist is good?
It depends on what you mean by “good”. For most patients “good” would probably include a combination of not just technical skill which is extremely important, but also experience, knowledge, ‘bedside’ manner, caring, honesty, gentleness, and integrity. Our commitment is to treat every patient the same way we would treat our own family, with the best quality that dentistry has to offer in a pain-free experience.
Insurance
Do you take insurance?
Yes, we do take insurance. Since every policy varies, please call 402-488-8670 to get information on your specific policy.

How often do I need to come back for checkups?
This will depend on your oral health and how effectively you care for your teeth and gums on a daily basis. Normally the dental hygienist will discuss with you your oral health and what she recommends as an appropriate interval for check ups and a professional cleaning, but it is always your decision as to what interval you choose.
Painless

How can a dentist be painless?
The answer to this question is simple. It only requires that the dentist cares enough to make that his goal and then take the time and have the knowledge and techniques to insure that the tooth is 100% numb before performing the dental treatment. We do this for every patient every time.
Is Dr. Canarsky painless?
Yes. This is a rather bold statement but after many years of practice and learning proper techniques, Dr. Canarsky has perfected ways to numb your teeth painlessly. If you are fearful or have had painful experiences in the past, we encourage you to allow us the opportunity to show you how comfortable dental care can be.
What is oral sedation?
Oral sedation is taking a medication before your dental appointment to help you relax and melt your anxiety away. It is for those patients who have dental fear or anxiety and need help in making their appointments more tolerable. It does not put you to sleep but you cannot drive. You will need someone to bring you to the dental office and back home. After a restful nap at home, many patients do not even remember the appointment. If fear or anxiety is keeping you away from getting the treatment that you need, call and visit with us to see if we can help you with oral sedation.

How can I prevent gum disease?
Good oral hygiene is the best protection against both gum disease and tooth decay. This includes both brushing and flossing. Dr. Canarsky recommends using a quality electric toothbrush such as the sonicare toothbrush. Regular dental checkups which include teeth cleaning and periodic xrays allows the patients to maintain great oral health.

What do you recommend about wisdom teeth?
In general, most people lack the space they need in order for their wisdom teeth to grow in properly. It is also difficult to clean them adequately. There are a few people though, who do have the room for them and can maintain them for a lifetime. If it appears that there is not enough space for them, it is always a good idea to have them removed sooner than later. The reason for this is that, in general, the younger you are when they are removed, the less pain there will be and the easier they will be to remove. If you have concerns about your wisdom teeth, we would be happy to check them for you and advise you about what options are best for you.
Symptoms
My gums are puffy and bleed easily. What is the problem?
You have gum disease or periodontitis. Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults but is easily preventable. Treatment of the disease, on the other hand, is more difficult and unpredictable. If you have red and bleeding gums, now is the time to have them checked, before permanent damage has been done. Earlier is better than later.
What are my options for broken or cracked teeth?
We have found that one of the most common problems adults have is cracking or breaking teeth. It can occur as a result of normal chewing pressures or night-time tooth grinding, but most commonly is associated with silver fillings. Silver fillings are metal and, as such, expand from heat when eating and drinking. Teeth, however, are more like glass and instead of expanding with the filling, they will crack, much like a windshield when struck by gravel. Once the tooth begins to crack, it will always progress and eventually break or split, resulting in tooth loss. Early detection of cracks by using an intra-oral camera that magnifies your teeth is best. If caught early, the tooth can be strengthened by a crown and perhaps root canal treatment so that tooth loss can be avoided. Call if you have not had your teeth checked with an intra-oral camera and let us insure that your teeth do not have any cracks. Prevention is always best. Today instead of silver fillings, we use bonded white fillings which are stronger and significantly reduce the likelihood of teeth cracking.

Treatments
Can I get my teeth fixed the first day I come to you?
It depends. If we can take care of a tooth problem on the first visit without causing other scheduled patients to wait, we will do so. In our office, we respect your time as much as we would like for you to respect our time. Obviously, if you are having an emergency problem, we will do whatever is necessary to make you comfortable. Our goal is to schedule patients so that when they have an appointment, they can know that they will be seen in a timely manner.
Do you do implants?
Yes. Over the last several years implants have become one of the best ways to replace missing teeth. They have the advantage of not being susceptible to decay or gum disease and have the potential of lasting a life time.

Do you straighten teeth?
Yes. Orthodontics is the first way that comes to mind for straightening teeth and Dr. Canarsky has had extensive training in orthodontics and is the first dentist in Lincoln to be a trained provider for Six Month Smiles. Six Month Smiles is a cosmetic orthodontic system for adults designed to straighten their teeth in 6 months or less. He is also a trained provider of Invisalign. Another way adults can have straight teeth is with what we call instant orthodontics. Crooked teeth are not actually straightened, but are given the appearance of being straight in 2 appointments with porcelain veneers or crowns.
Do you take x-rays?
It depends. X-rays are a valuable diagnostic tool that allows us to see inside the teeth and the areas in the jaw bone. Without them, there would be decay and other pathology that we could not discover. With that said, we do, however, believe in taking the minimal amount of x-rays that will allow us to be thorough in catching any dental problems. We also rely on visual examination with intra-oral cameras and the Diagnodent to help us detect dental problems and minimize taking x-rays. We believe it is our responsibility to make sure you have a healthy mouth and to catch any problems as early as possible. If you do have any concerns with x-rays, please ask us. We want to make sure you are comfortable before we provide any dental treatment.
Do you use silver fillings?
No. When Dr. Jim Canarsky began his dental practice, silver fillings were considered the standard of care, but due to changes and improvements in technology, they are now highly inferior to bonded white fillings. It is now known that as silver fillings age, they will leak bacteria or decay around the edges and often times it will not be detected until the decay is quite large and perhaps a root canal is necessary. The second more serious problem with silver fillings is that since they are metal, they contribute to teeth cracking and breaking. Usually the only way to detect leaking decay or cracks is by visual inspection with an intra-oral camera. If you have silver fillings and have not had this done yet, Dr. Canarsky highly recommends this. Problems are always better treated sooner than later.
How can I have a better smile?
Today we have the technology to improve everyone’s smile. From simple tooth whitening to porcelain veneers, implants, and Six Month Smiles (adult cosmetic braces), we have the means to make everyone feel better about their smile.
How do you recommend that I whiten my teeth?
Today you can have whiter teeth by using over-the-counter tooth whiteners (Crest Whitestips), in-office tooth whitening, at-home whitening trays, or porcelain veneers and crowns. Which choice would work best for you depends on your unique dental needs. Let us help you decide what would work best to achieve the smile that you want.

What are sealants and do they really help?
Sealants are a wonderful preventive treatment that everyone should consider for their permanent teeth. Sealants are a plastic protective coating that should be placed on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth as early as possible. They are very effective in reducing the amount of decay that develops over a lifetime. It is essential to thoroughly check the surfaces of the teeth for decay before applying the sealant. We first use a laser cavity detector to assure that the tooth is decay-free before applying the sealant as we have found that a significant number of back teeth may have defects that require fillings instead of sealants. If you have not had your or your child’s teeth checked and sealed, it would be worthwhile to do so as it may save you money and keep you from having bigger problems in the future.
