It depends.  X-rays are a valuable diagnostic tool that allows us to see inside the teeth and the areas in the jaw bone.  Without them, there would be decay and other pathology that we could not discover.  With that said, we do, however, believe in taking the minimal amount of x-rays that will allow us to be thorough in catching any dental problems.  We also rely on visual examination with intra-oral cameras and the Diagnodent to help us detect dental problems and minimize taking x-rays.  We believe it is our responsibility to make sure you have a healthy mouth and to catch any problems as early as possible.  If you do have any concerns with x-rays, please ask us.  We want to make sure you are comfortable before we provide any dental treatment.

No.  When Dr. Jim Canarsky began his dental practice, silver fillings were considered the standard of care, but due to changes and improvements in technology, they are now highly inferior to bonded white fillings.  It is now known that as silver fillings age, they will leak bacteria or decay around the edges and often times it will not be detected until the decay is quite large and perhaps a root canal is necessary.  The second more serious problem with silver fillings is that since they are metal, they contribute to teeth cracking and breaking.  Usually the only way to detect leaking decay or cracks is by visual inspection with an intra-oral camera.  If you have silver fillings and have not had this done yet, Dr. Canarsky highly recommends this.  Problems are always better treated sooner than later.

Sealants are a wonderful preventive treatment that everyone should consider for their permanent teeth.  Sealants are a plastic protective coating that should be placed on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth as early as possible.  They are very effective in reducing the amount of decay that develops over a lifetime.  It is essential to thoroughly check the surfaces of the teeth for decay before applying the sealant. We first use a laser cavity detector to assure that the tooth is decay-free before applying the sealant as we have found that a significant number of back teeth may have defects that require fillings instead of sealants.  If you have not had your or your child’s teeth checked and sealed, it would be worthwhile to do so as it may save you money and keep you from having bigger problems in the future.
